QUFA:Letters of support and solidarity

The following are letters of support and solidarity:

Events

  • April 11, 2017 Equal Pay Day Join us in front of Stauffer Library on the corner of University Avenue and Union Street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11 as we draw attention to the Gender Wage Gap.In Ontario, the average hourly wage earned by women is 87.4% of that earned by men1. This wage gap is considerably worse for traditionally disadvantaged groups. For example, aboriginal women earn only 64% of that earned by non-aboriginal men2, and women with disabilities earn only 52% of that earned by men without disabilities3.More information about the Gender Wage Gap in Ontario can be found on the Ontario Equal Pay Coalition website (http://equalpaycoalition.org/).There will be free doughnut-holes (for the women) and doughnuts (for the men), along with buttons to show your solidarity with women and other disadvantaged groups in relation to the Wage Gap. Everyone is encouraged to wear red, because the Wage Gap keeps women ‘in the red’. Federal NDP leadership candidate Charlie Angus will be on location from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Equal Pay Day Rally is being organized/sponsored by a collection of groups on Queen’s University campus, including: PSAC 901, Queen’s University Equity Office, Queen’s University Faculty Association (QUFA), USW 2010, Alma Mater Society (AMS).

    • May 19, 2016 – Information picket at the Royal Military College held by the union representing the Commissionaires. They have been without a contract since 2014 and their primary roadblock to reaching one is their employer’s refusal to provide them with paid sick days. More information on this event can be found on the CKWS website. I will be joining the Commissionaires and other labour groups supporting them on Thursday morning at the information picket on behalf of QUFA. I will be carrying the QUFA flag and would welcome any interested QUFA members to join me. I plan to be there for 8:30am. The media is scheduled to be on site around 9:00am so it would be great if there was a large turnout in support of the Commissionaires. Map of RMC location:

  • As you may know we have had one day of conciliation with the employer. The session ended early, however, and we have scheduled strike mandate votes for Oct 13, 14 and 17th (see below).Negotiations have come to a halt due to these key issues:*   We are asking for an increase to the minimum salary for postdocs, currently at $32,174., which does not reflect living expenses in Kingston – we have members going to the foodbank. This is clearly not productive and should not happen. We are not asking for a “25% increase” of salary for all postdocs as stated by Queen’s Faculty Relations to the media.*   We are asking for childcare benefits comparable to those enjoyed by other Queen’s employees. Childcare is key in helping postdoc parents be productive researchers and everyone benefits. The employee’s offer on the table is not comparable to other employee groups, as stated by the Queen’s Faculty Relations to the media. We continue to stand by QUFA members and stress that the employer needs to assist supervisors whose funds pay for postdoctoral scholars. It is not acceptable that this should solely fall on the principal investigators who do their very best to ensure their postdocs are compensated properly and fairly. On our members’ behalf PSAC 901 thanks postdoc supervisors and QUFA for their continued support.Thank you,
    Craig Berggold
